Fibromyalgia Treatment in Lahore

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes widespread body pain, deep fatigue, unrefreshing sleep and difficulty concentrating. There is no single cure, but it is very treatable: international guidelines rank supervised, graded exercise therapy as the most effective treatment, ahead of medication. At PMC – Pain Management Clinic by Dr. Waqar Ali, our fibromyalgia treatment in Lahore and Rawalpindi combines carefully graded exercise, hands-on physiotherapy and pain education to reduce your pain, rebuild your energy and put you back in control.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia (fibromyalgia syndrome, or FMS) is a long-term pain condition in which the nervous system becomes over-sensitised, so the brain and spinal cord amplify normal signals into pain. This is called central sensitisation. The pain is completely real, even though X-rays, MRIs and blood tests usually come back normal.

Fibromyalgia affects roughly 2–4% of adults worldwide and is diagnosed two to three times more often in women. It often appears alongside poor sleep, irritable bowel symptoms, headaches and low mood, and many patients in Pakistan spend years moving between doctors before receiving a clear diagnosis.

What Are the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

  • Widespread aching or burning pain on both sides of the body, above and below the waist, lasting three months or more
  • Tenderness: even light pressure on muscles can hurt
  • Deep fatigue that rest does not fix
  • Unrefreshing sleep, waking up as tired as when you went to bed
  • “Fibro fog”: trouble concentrating, remembering and finding words
  • Morning stiffness, headaches, dizziness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Symptoms that flare with stress, poor sleep, weather changes or overexertion

Important: new weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats or joint swelling are not typical of fibromyalgia and should be assessed by a doctor to rule out other conditions.

How Do We Treat Fibromyalgia at PMC?

Medication helps only around a third of fibromyalgia patients, which is why guideline-based care is built around active, physiotherapy-led treatment. Your programme at PMC may include:

  • Graded aerobic exercise – the strongest-evidence treatment for fibromyalgia. We start below your flare threshold (often just minutes of walking or cycling) and progress gradually to rebuild stamina without setbacks.
  • Progressive strength training – gentle resistance work shown in recent research to be among the most effective ways to reduce fibromyalgia pain in the short and long term.
  • Stretching and mobility work – easing stiffness and improving day-to-day movement.
  • Pain neuroscience education – understanding central sensitisation reduces fear of movement and is proven to improve outcomes when combined with exercise.
  • Manual therapy and soft-tissue release – hands-on techniques to settle tender, guarded muscles and make exercise more comfortable.
  • Sleep, pacing and flare-up planning – practical routines for balancing activity and rest, so good days no longer cost you the next three.
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques – calming an overactive nervous system, which sits at the heart of the condition.

What Our Clients Say

Self-Help Tips for Living with Fibromyalgia

01

Move a little every day. Short, frequent, gentle activity beats occasional intense effort.

02

Pace yourself: break tasks into chunks and rest before you are exhausted, not after.

03

Protect your sleep: fixed wake time, wind-down routine, and limit screens and caffeine late in the day.

04

Warm showers or a heating pad can ease stiff, aching muscles during flares.

05

Keep a simple symptom diary to spot your personal flare triggers.

06

Stay connected: isolation and stress amplify pain, and support genuinely dampens it.

FAQ's about Fibromyalgia

Is fibromyalgia a real condition?

Yes. Fibromyalgia is a recognised chronic pain condition in which the nervous system becomes over-sensitive and amplifies pain signals. The pain is real, even though blood tests and scans usually come back normal.

Can fibromyalgia be cured?

There is currently no cure, but fibromyalgia can be managed well. Graded exercise therapy, pain education, sleep strategies and pacing consistently reduce pain, fatigue and flare-ups, and many people return to a full, active life.

What is the most effective treatment for fibromyalgia?

International guidelines strongly recommend supervised exercise therapy, particularly low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise and strength training, as the first-line treatment. Medication helps only a minority of patients, which is why physiotherapy-led care is central.

Will exercise make my fibromyalgia pain worse?

Not when it is properly graded. Starting too hard can trigger flare-ups, so we begin below your flare threshold and build up gradually. Research shows lower-intensity, progressive programmes give the best results with the fewest dropouts.

How is fibromyalgia diagnosed?

Diagnosis is clinical, based on widespread pain lasting at least three months alongside fatigue, unrefreshing sleep and difficulty concentrating. Tests may be used to rule out other conditions such as thyroid problems or inflammatory arthritis.

Why do I feel exhausted and foggy as well as sore?

Fatigue, unrefreshing sleep and “fibro fog” (poor concentration and memory) are core features of fibromyalgia, not separate problems. Treatment that improves sleep and gradually rebuilds fitness typically improves these symptoms alongside the pain.
